You may have noticed our slogan on our website main page: “Confidence & Peace of Mind in Every Box.” One aspect about our products has inspired that slogan and that aspect is that a majority of our products have been under a safety evaluation from the company Underwriter’s Laboratory. You may ask who is Underwriter’s Laboratory and what tests have been done? Good questions! Let’s seek to clarify just what this means.
UL: That little label with a circled “U” and “L”
Have you ever noticed those little stickers or labels on some things you buy which has the letters “U” and “L” with a circle around them? That’s a good sign, as that product was tested at some point to ensure its safety. Underwriter’s Laboratory is one of the many options for a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.
They conduct many rigorous tests and evaluations on new/existing products within the product’s designated safety standard. There are many safety standards from which to choose. While all standards have safety in mind, it’s the type of safety that’s important. What types of safety are Functional Devices’ products tested? That’s another great question.
Our safety standards
If you look closely at our product labels, literature, or datasheets, you’ll see more details on the UL standards that our products fall within. Here is a quick list of all the standards you may see:
- UL 916: Energy Management Equipment
- UL 864: Smoke Control System Equipment; System Control Unit Accessories; Miscellaneous Signal Appliances; Energy Management Equipment
- UL 508: Magnetic Motor Controllers; Power Circuit and Motor-mounted Apparatus
- UL 924: Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment
- UL 5085: Class 2 and Class 3 Transformers; General Purpose Transformers
